Our panel will discuss how the SDGs are providing a holistic approach to achieving sustainable development for all as well as ways you can get involved in the global goals movement.

Alison Mehlsak, Purpose Planner, Futerra

Ali thrives at the intersection of communications and strategy, providing elegant solutions to the complex sustainability challenges clients send her way. She’s honed her craft both in-house and at agencies, working for brands like Nike, The Coca-Cola Company, Hilton Worldwide, and General Mills. Inspired by the power of sport to be a vehicle for change, today she dreams of growing up to be Leslie Knope.

Margaret Williams, Senior Peace & Security Officer, WFUNA

Margaret Williams is the Senior Peace and Security Officer at the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA). In this role, she also coordinates the 16+ Forum, a multi-stakeholder platform designed to showcase solutions, challenges and best practices in advancing peace, justice and inclusion in policy and practice at local, national and regional levels through the implementation of SDG 16+. (SDG 16+ refers to Sustainable Development Goal 16 on peaceful, just and inclusive societies, related components across the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and links to other UN priorities).

With experience in policy development, program implementation and management, advocacy and research, Margaret has worked on issues related to good governance and state-society relations, youth, peace and security, gender equality, and education. Beyond New York, she has worked in Tunisia, Palestine, Cyprus, and Greece. She holds a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from The Fletcher School at Tufts University and has published on youth, peacebuilding, violent extremism, and the Middle East and North Africa.

Laura Vélez Villa, Senior Associate, Strategic Growth, B Lab

Laura Velez Villa leads B Lab’s program and partnerships to drive business action on the Sustainable Development Goals. She joined B Lab’s New York-based Strategic Growth team in 2016, after serving as Executive Director of B Lab’s partner in Colombia – Sistema B – since 2014.

Prior to B Lab, Laura led Endeavor Chile’s Search and Selection team, supporting local high-growth entrepreneurs across the country, and served as a Research Associate at Harvard Business School, with a dual focus on non-market strategies and corporate sustainability.

She graduated magna cum laude at Brandeis University in 2011 with a bachelors in Economics and International and Global Studies, and was a recipient of the Wien International Scholarship.

Siamak Sam Loni, Global Coordinator, SDSN Youth

Siamak Sam Loni is a young global leader working in sustainable development, youth empowerment and human rights. He is based at the Secretariat of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) in NYC. The SDSN is a program launched by former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to mobilize global expertise around the implementation of the SDGs.

In 2015, Sam founded and currently leads SDSN Youth, a program which empowers youth globally to create sustainable development solutions. As its Global Coordinator, Sam has mobilized thousands of young people globally to engage with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He has helped initiate several global programs, including the Local Pathways Fellowship, the Global Schools Program and the Solutions Hub.

Sam is also the Partnerships Manager of SDSN’s new Financing for Sustainable Development initiative – where he helps coordinate efforts to mobilize global funding and resources to close the SDG financing gap. Previously, Sam worked at the Monash Sustainable Development Institute (MSDI), one of the leading interdisciplinary research and education institutes for sustainable development around the globe.


Marcos Salazar (@marcossalazar) is a serial social entrepreneur, career coach, speaker, and community-builder. For as long as Marcos has been working in the social impact space, he has also been building businesses.

Marcos has worked in research and leadership development at the American Psychological Association, Girl Scouts, and the White House Project (promoting women to run for office). He is also the founder of two t-shirt companies, a number of social impact blogs, and the author of two books.

Through Be Social Change, Marcos taps into his entrepreneur’s creativity and social good inspiration to help people find and do meaningful work and lead more sustainable lifestyles.
