Panelists Bios

 

Dr. Sapana Shah, Assistant Professor at NYU School of Medicine and Practicing Internist at Bellevue Hospital

Dr. Sapana Shah teaches residents and medical students as well as sees her own patients in one of the country’s oldest safety-net hospitals. She is passionate about plant-based medicine and works in Bellevue’s newly established Plant-Based Lifestyle Medicine Program, where she helps patients regain control of their health using an approach that centers around healthy eating.

Nzinga Young, Community Events Coordinator, Vegan Outreach

Nzinga Young is the Greater NY Community Events Coordinator for the international nonprofit Vegan Outreach. She organizes weekly events to show people of all backgrounds vegan food can be affordable, appetizing, and easy to prepare. Nzinga has spoken at the Animal Rights National Conference in DC, hosted the Intersectional Vegan Conference in London, was invited by Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams to host a cooking demo in Borough Hall, and served as a vegan contributor for Huffington Post.

Aisha Smith, Founder & Nurse Practitioner, Save Our Sexy Inc. (SOS)

Aisha is a Board-Certified Nurse Practitioner and graduate of New York University’s Adult Geriatric Holistic NP Program. She has been trained in functional medicine, clinical aromatherapy and vegan health.

Aisha also founded Save Our Sexy Inc., a non-profit organization focused on responding to the urgent need for Type 2 diabetes education and intervention within communities of color.

Martin Rowe, Co-Founder, Publisher, & Editor-in-Chief, Lantern Books

Martin Rowe publishes books on vegetarianism, environmentalism, animal advocacy, religion, and social justice. He is the author of The Elephants in the Room, The Polar Bear in the Zoo, and Nicaea, and editor of The Way of Compassion and Running, Eating, Thinking: A Vegan Anthology.

He co-founded the magazine Satya. He initiated the Vegan America Project, which is being run under the auspices of Brighter Green. The Project is an investigation of how we might envision the United States of America around the year 2050, should it be no longer possible or desirable to use animals for food, clothing, labor, entertainment, or experimentation.

Marcos Salazar (@marcossalazar) is a serial social entrepreneur, career coach, speaker, and community-builder. For as long as Marcos has been working in the social impact space, he has also been building businesses.

Marcos has worked in research and leadership development at the American Psychological Association, Girl Scouts, and the White House Project (promoting women to run for office). He is also the founder of two t-shirt companies, a number of social impact blogs, and the author of two books.

Through Be Social Change, Marcos taps into his entrepreneur’s creativity and social good inspiration to help people find and do meaningful work and lead more sustainable lifestyles.
