Be Social Change Members Monica and Gideon founded the Good Capital Investment Group in 2018, inspired by a desire to make investing more sustainable, accessible, and socially responsible. In speaking about the importance of finance during this time, Gideon remarks, “It’s been a time to educate ourselves and educate others on the power that they wield when it comes to their finances. And, that goes through so many different layers of finance. It goes from where you bank to what your investments are, to where you spend.”

However, the journey to Good Capital was not a linear one. Both Monica and Gideon took unique pathways to the investment world.

Monica started off as an analyst for Citi Bank but found more purpose in teaching preschool students. Wanting to reach more students, she went into EdTech, working for startups while simultaneously becoming more socially responsible in various aspects of her life, especially personal investing.

For Gideon, in his junior year of college, while riding his motorcycle, he was hit by a car, resulting in him obtaining and investing a lump sum of money from the accident. He learned about finance and how to manage money but was not quite an investor yet. Gideon adds, “As a 21 year old that just had a near death experience I felt the need to do something very profound with my life. So scaring the shit out of my mom for the second time in one year, I decided to get a pilot’s license and became a pilot.” Flying was a lonely profession for Gideon and he found himself honing an interest in studying finance, even “in the cockpit with other pilots.” He left aviation and worked on finance full-time, reconnecting with high-school sweetheart Monica, who also was pursuing a career change.

Monica and Gideon have been a part of Be Social Change since 2019, drawn to Be Social Change’s impact investing panels and facilitation workshops. When asked about the relationships they’ve formed through Be Social Change, they responded, “so many!” They have connected with captivating speakers such as Eric Glass, Municipalities Portfolio Manager at AllianceBernstein, inviting him to an investing panel they hosted, showing how connections can be leveraged through the Be Social Change community. In fact, Monica and Gideon credit most of their beneficial business connections as originating at Be Social Change events.

Through Good Capital Investment Group, Monica and Gideon have made ripples in the investment world, helping to transfer people over to more sustainable investments. They divest clients’ holdings from traditional portfolios to more responsible investments, resulting in less exposure to tobacco companies, gun manufacturers, coal producers, and private prisons. They advise people who want to enter the investing field to be “mission oriented” and to “just dive in”- emphasizing that investing can be accessible, enlightening, and a hugely important aspect of an individual’s impact.
